At least for the time being, Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina is serving as the Speaker of the House

After Kevin McCarthy was removed from his position as speaker of the House for reasons beyond his control, one of McCarthy’s most trusted lieutenants assumed the role of acting speaker of the House. McCarthy was pushed out of his post in part by colleagues who had been instrumental in getting him elected to that position nine months earlier. His colleagues were vital in getting him elected to that position.

After a vote on Tuesday to remove Kevin McCarthy from his post as speaker of the House of Representatives, Republican Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina was chosen to succeed McCarthy as the next speaker of the House of Representatives. McHenry is the very first individual in the annals of the House to serve in this capacity. McHenry was selected from a list that McCarthy was supposed to keep, and according to the rules of the House, he will serve in a capacity that is akin to that of the acting speaker, which is known as the speaker pro tempore, until the chamber picks who will take over as the next leader of the chamber. McCarthy was supposed to keep the list. It was anticipated that McCarthy would maintain the list.
