The family of a young child found abandoned in a Dallas hospital emergency department is believed to have been located, according to the Department of Family and Protective Services.
According to the DFPS, the child’s mother may have left her off at the Baylor Medical Center Dallas emergency room on Monday. The child could only provide authorities with her initial name at the time; no further details were verified. The DFPS has now stated that they think they have communication with the girl’s family.
The girl is still under the care of Child Protective Services, according to the DFPS.
Next Thursday, December 14, is scheduled as the first court date in her case.
The Baby Moses statute in Texas “gives parents who are unable to care for their child a safe and legal choice to leave their infant with an employee at a designated safe place,” according to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. However, infants that are safe and undamaged and younger than 60 days old are covered by the Baby Moses statute.
By contrast, a Safe Place is not the same. Children under the age of eighteen can seek out safe havens and prompt assistance there. Libraries, YMCAs, fire stations, public transportation hubs, commercial establishments, and social service facilities are examples of Safe Place places.
