According to a document of sale, the 1,700-acre South Carolina hunting lodge where Alex Murdaugh, a former well-known state attorney, murdered his wife and younger son, sold for $3.9 million.
Murdaugh was found guilty earlier this month of killing his son Paul and wife Maggie Murdaugh at the country residence. According to the court record submitted on March 22 in South Carolina and viewed by CBS MoneyWatch, the buyers are James A. Ayer and Jeffrey L. Godley.
The Murdaugh family’s surviving son, Buster, and those hurt in Paul’s boating tragedy in 2019, according to a settlement approved by a South Carolina judge in January, will receive money from the sale.

According to the publication, Beach’s family and the two crash survivors will receive the majority of the earnings, or around $2.7 million. Although Buster Murdaugh will receive $530,000, another boating accident survivor will receive $100,000. Together with other payments to creditors and legal costs, nearly $300,000 more will go into the Alex Murdaugh Settlement Fund for Creditors and Financial Victims.
Three times the usual attendance, according to Emily McGarry, an employee of the auction house, attended the auction of antiques from the Mosel estate on Thursday.
The Murdaughs’ home in Colleton County, South Carolina, as seen as evidence at Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial in February.The Moselle property comprises a “well-appointed” 5,275-square-foot home that was custom-built in 2011 and could be converted into a “weekend hunting lodge that sleeps 15,” according to the property listing.
“Complete with commercial appliances and a large games room, [the house] is perfect for entertaining large groups,” says the property listing.
The property also features a 1,140-square-foot guest house, as well as 2.5 miles of riverfront that offers freshwater fishing, kayaking and other sports, it said.
