Tuesday night, the Dallas Stars defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 6-3, in which captain Jamie Benn recorded his 500th career assist and Miro Heiskanen scored two goals. The Red Wings were without suspended forward David Perron and injured captain Dylan Larkin.
The NHL suspended Perron for six games without pay on Monday in retaliation for a cross-check he delivered against Ottawa defenseman Artem Zub two days earlier. This occurred after Senators forward Mathieu Joseph cross-checked Larkin in the back of the head and neck, resulting in Larkin becoming incapacitated.
“The previous game, in particular, was undoubtedly a bit of a shell shock.” “However, I believe we gained some confidence throughout the course of today’s game,” said Red Wings center Andrew Copp. “I believe we were a little unsure of how things would develop; we were simply missing a few of those guys that we are.”
The Stars defeated Detroit at home for the eleventh consecutive time since January 2017. Jason Robertson and Esa Lindell each contributed one goal and one assist. Two days prior, they rebounded to suffer a 6-1 home loss to Vegas.
Stars head coach Pete DeBoer stated, “I was a little concerned about our energy levels tonight, as we played six games in ten nights.” “However, when we arrived, we believed we had good energy, and everyone made valuable contributions.”
Late in the first period, Dallas took the lead with Lindell’s goal in the tally. The puck struck the left post with 0.2 seconds remaining on the clock and ricocheted over the line to extend the lead to 2-1, according to the replay.
Coach Pete DeBoer of the Stars stated, “The goal at the end of the first is enormous… a significant momentum shift for us that takes that away from them.”
“Attempt to fire rapidly,” Lindell advised. “I was somewhat surprised that it went in, and I was uncertain whether it had beat the clock.”
Lindell provided the primary assist on Robertson’s ninth goal, which occurred in the middle of the second period, prior to the goal scored by Matt Duchene that extended the lead to 4-1. With 6:09 remaining, Joe Pavelski scored on a power play, mere 30 seconds after Joe Veleno had scored to give Detroit a 4-3 lead.
Robertson and Benn provided assistance on Heiskanen’s first-period power-play goal, which restored the score at 1-1. Heiskanen scored the game-tying empty-net goal with 42 seconds remaining.
Goaltender Jake Oettinger of the Stars recorded 27 stops in action. James Reimer of Detroit prevented 29 of 34 attempts.
