Is the Keto diet safe to follow while nursing?

The Keto Diet: What Is It?
The ketogenic diet is a low-carb, high-fat eating plan. The diet focuses on eliminating the main source of energy (carbohydrate), which is often used to power bodily activities. As there is no longer any glucose available, the body must now rely on fat for energy. When following a ketogenic diet, a person goes into ketosis, a state in which ketones are created. At this point, your body mostly uses proteins and lipids for energy. However, a ketogenic diet is not suggested for the long term. Vegetables, butter, coconut oil, and dairy products high in fat are all part of the diet.

The Keto Diet: What Mothers Need to Know
Your body produces ketones while you follow a ketogenic diet, and these ketones serve as your body’s main source of energy. To stay in shape, you must maintain this state, but as already mentioned, this approach is not sustainable over the long term. Your milk production may be impacted by the keto diet calories you’ve stopped consuming. Everyone’s body composition is unique, thus it is not necessary that it just influences the production of milk. Also, it may deny your milk of vital nutrients necessary for your child’s development and immune system strengthening. You won’t get enough calories on a Keto diet. The foods in the diet are already sufficient to fill you up.

Is the ketogenic diet safe for nursing mothers?
The diet has stringent requirements and is inappropriate for a nursing mother. Starchy foods, cereals, and vegetables are prohibited. This diet can affect your body if the level of ketones bodies rises by more than 5 mmol/L. Ketoacidosis, which can cause the normal blood pH values to become acidic, can result from ketosis. This might be deadly. The body runs out of essential nutrients like potassium, fiber, vitamin B1, vitamin C, and vitamin C. When you don’t consume important nutrients like fiber, you also have an impact on your gut’s bacteria. Your infant may lack important nutrients if they don’t get enough of them. Even brain fog is possible, and it can continue for a few hours.
