Head coach Mike McCarthy will remain with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a statement by Jerry Jones.
Jones issued the following statement on Wednesday: “I believe this team is extremely close and capable of achieving our ultimate objectives; with Mike McCarthy as our head coach, we will take the greatest step forward.”
McCarthy, who recently concluded his rookie season as Prescott’s play-caller, still has one year remaining on his contract. However, his employment was called into question following the team’s wild card playoff defeat to the Green Bay Packers.
A statement by Jerry Jones, proprietor and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys
“With Mike McCarthy as our head coach, I believe this group is exceptionally close and capable of reaching our ultimate objectives; therefore, the best course of action for us will be to proceed.” There are significant advantages to maintaining the team’s advancement while Mike serves as our chief coach. In particular, this season has witnessed numerous tiers of success due to Mike’s leadership style, which has benefited both individual players and the group as a whole. Mike has led the Cowboys to the highest regular season winning percentage of any head coach in franchise history. We are committed to working closely with him to ensure that our postseason objectives are successfully accomplished. Undoubtedly, Mike has exhibited commendable postseason success throughout his career, and we are extremely optimistic that this trend will continue.
Moreover, our Sunday loss is a collective effort, not exclusive to Coach McCarthy. Our athletes. Our coaching staff. Our reception area. I, myself. We are held accountable for our outcomes. Specifically, I am responsible for our outcomes. We view and assess Coach McCarthy through a holistic lens. Although we are all disheartened with the outcome on Sunday and our overall playoff standing, I wholeheartedly endorse him in his capacity as our head coach and in our endeavor to accomplish our objectives.
We will start our process of review and decision making regarding everything that impacts our team and roster and, while we’re not going to address specific players and extensions or free agents at this point, it deserves our deepest review and consideration, and it will get it.”
Although McCarthy has led the Cowboys to three consecutive 12-win playoff seasons, Dallas is the first team to fail to qualify for the conference championship game during that exact span of three seasons.
