MITRE, a not-for-profit organization specializing in science and technology solutions, has made significant leadership appointments to bolster its impact in the fields of science and technology. Charles Clancy, Ph.D., has been named Chief Technology Officer (CTO) while retaining his role as Senior Vice President and General Manager of MITRE Labs. Dr. Jay Schnitzer, MITRE’s Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, has been designated as Corporate Chief Engineer.
Charles Clancy, Ph.D., assumes the role of Chief Technology Officer, where he will oversee the MITRE independent research and development (IR&D) program, in addition to his existing responsibilities as Senior Vice President and General Manager of MITRE Labs. In this integrated role, Clancy will lead MITRE’s science, technology, and engineering workforce, manage the IR&D program, and oversee extramural research activities. His goal is to leverage MITRE’s research endeavors to drive impacts across the nation by collaborating with industry, academia, and other non-profit organizations.
Dr. Jay Schnitzer has been appointed as the Corporate Chief Engineer, where he will play a pivotal role in ensuring technical quality and mission impact across MITRE’s wide-ranging activities. He will also focus on staff development and will continue his responsibilities as Chief Medical Officer. In this capacity, Schnitzer will uphold MITRE’s commitment to technical excellence, providing critical support to federal sponsors in achieving their missions.
Jason Providakes, Ph.D., President and CEO of MITRE, emphasized the critical role of science and technology in the nation’s future, particularly in an era marked by global strategic competition. Providakes stated, “Charles will leverage MITRE’s research activities to drive whole-of-nation impacts across MITRE’s work with sponsors and partners in industry, academia, and other non-profit organizations. Jay will ensure our work meets the high bar of technical excellence needed to help our federal sponsors succeed in their missions and will continue to advance our cancer and quantum computing R&D programs.”
Charles Clancy, Ph.D., joined MITRE in 2019 and has held various leadership roles within the organization. He brings a wealth of experience, having served as the Bradley Distinguished Professor of Cybersecurity at Virginia Tech and as a research leader at the National Security Agency. Clancy was recognized in 2022 as a fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers for his contributions to secure and wireless communications.
Dr. Jay Schnitzer has been with MITRE since 2013 and has served as the company’s Chief Technology Officer for eight years. His distinguished career includes leadership roles at organizations such as DARPA and Boston Scientific. Schnitzer’s medical background includes over 15 years as an attending pediatric surgeon and associate professor of surgery at prestigious institutions, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Shriners Children’s Hospital Boston, and Harvard Medical School. He has received several accolades for his contributions to healthcare and technology.
