Paris-based Emily Camille Razat on fame, fashion, and cliches: The French actress discusses the elegant look of her Netflix role, Roger Vivier collaborations, and upcoming movies

The most divisive program on television is Emily in Paris, a Netflix series about a young American who works as a marketing executive in the fashion industry in the French city. Since it began in 2020, the widely panned—and widely adored—series with Lily Collins as its lead has served as the subject of innumerable memes and heated comments.

Yet, as Camille Razat explains on the margins of Paris Fashion Week in early March, those who can’t stop complaining about its over-the-top portrayal of life in Paris and the cliché of the naïve American experiencing culture shock in France are missing the point. Emily’s rival Camille, played by Razat, is a charming Parisian who finds himself in a love triangle with Emily and the attractive French chef Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo.

Razat has not been completely taken aback by the series’ success. Although Sex and the City and Beverly Hills 90210 were produced by the same director, Darren Star, she adds, “I thought it would be something, but I didn’t know it was going to be so enormous.” “I am recognized by people on the street, and I have a following. Although I find it strange, I’m happy that viewers enjoy the program.
At French fashion house Roger Vivier’s autumn/winter 2023 runway show, Razat, 29, looked the part in a stylish grey suit accessorized with a bright pink bag and matching shoes. She also said that she enjoys acting out her role.
“Since Camille is independent and has other career interests in addition to the family business, she is multidimensional and has many facets to her personality. You can tell she’s an entrepreneur from it, adds Razat.

She adores Emily and is very close to her, but she is unsure of how she feels about Gabriel. She has a fluid sexuality as well. Since the first season, I have always portrayed her as bisexual because I have always believed that she is. I said to Darren, “I think she might be bi. Do with it what you will, but that’s the impression I get.
