Rise to the Challenge: Rolex Middle Sea Race

Since it was originally contested in 1968, the Royal Malta Yacht Club (RMYC), which organizes the race, has steadily increased its status and prestige. Currently, it regularly attracts a diverse fleet of over 100 yachts from close to 30 nations, including modern multihulls and maxi monohulls. It has become a “must do” event on the yachting calendar for sailors all around the world. The relationship between Rolex and the event’s organizers dates back to 2002.

The appeal is clear to see. The 1,122-kilometer, 606-nautical-mile circuit is both stunning and difficult. The highlights include rumbling volcanoes, untamed islands, and seas that are infused with folklore. The workers are put under a lot of stress by the geography they meet along the way. Wind and water conditions might fluctuate drastically at each course corner. Flat, tranquil waves can suddenly become enormous swells, and mild breezes can suddenly become devastating gusts.

In Malta, the enthusiasm for the race is palpable. The event also sparks a lot of interest abroad. As time goes by, more and more sailors take part, expanding the event’s attractiveness and mythology.

The RMYC challenges itself to guarantee the competition matches the requirements of a contemporary offshore race, just as the crews continuously improve their skills and the designs of their yachts change to embrace the present in thinking, technology, and materials.
