Roy McGrath, a former aide to former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, has an arrest warrant out for him after failing to show up for his federal corruption trial on Monday in Baltimore.
Judge Deborah Boardman of the U.S. District Court issued the warrant after McGrath failed to show up for court as required by the rules of his pretrial release. She also sent the jury members home.
Let’s hope that there was a mix-up and that he is safe, Boardman added.
According to The Washington Post, law enforcement examined McGrath’s Florida house but found nothing.
On charges of wire fraud, embezzlement, and document falsification, McGrath has entered a not guilty plea. When he left the Maryland Environmental Service prior to taking a job as Hogan’s chief of staff in 2020, he is accused of obtaining a $233,648 severance payment.
A few months after hearing about the six-figure payoff, which was equivalent to one year’s salary, McGrath left Hogan’s team.
In addition to failing to claim vacation time for travels to Florida and while on a European cruise, McGrath is also accused of engaging in fraudulent behavior by asking the state of Maryland for tens of thousands of dollars in reimbursements for expenses.
In order to comply with the terms of his pretrial release, McGrath had to give up his passport in October 2021. Also, he had to receive medical or psychological treatment, which was eventually discontinued.
Joseph Murtha, McGrath’s attorney, claimed on Monday that he had made numerous attempts to contact both his client and his wife. McGrath, according to him, had intended to leave for Maryland on Sunday night.
