A dog tick (left) and a deer tick (right) flank a Lone Star tick (center). Red meat allergy is thought to be mostly caused by the Lone Star tick, but other ticks cannot be completely ruled out.

Due to people spending more time outside during this time of year, there is an increase in emergency room visits for tick bites. More and more research is connecting these bites to illnesses like Lyme disease and babesiosis. Moreover, alpha gal syndrome, which results in a red meat allergy, is a new concern linked to tick bites.

More than ten years ago, when researchers discovered patients who experienced allergic reactions like hives or anaphylaxis, they made the connection between red meat allergies and tick bites for the first time.
