Tragic South Boston Crash Claims Life of Young Mother, Leaving Three Children in Grief

South Boston, MA – The South Boston community is in mourning following a tragic accident that claimed the life of 23-year-old Kayla Bertoncini, a young mother of three. The devastating incident unfolded on Saturday, leaving behind a grieving fiancé and three young children who now face an uncertain future.

Massachusetts State Police have identified the victim as Kayla Bertoncini, a 23-year-old woman from New Bedford. Her sudden and untimely death has left her fiancé with the responsibility of caring for their three young children. The children’s ages are 4 years old, 3 years old, and just 4 months old, according to details provided on a GoFundMe page established to support the family during this difficult time.

The tragedy occurred in South Boston when police responded to a collision involving a minivan and a flatbed tow truck around 11:33 p.m. on Saturday. Bertoncini was driving a 2023 Chrysler Pacifica westbound on South Boston Bypass Road, just east of Frontage Road. Tragically, the Chrysler crossed over the double yellow lines and collided with the eastbound tow truck, which was towing another vehicle at the time.

State police troopers promptly removed Bertoncini from her vehicle and rushed her to Boston Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The loss of the young mother, who was described as an “amazing mother” by her friend Jade DeMoranville, has left her three children without their devoted caretaker.

The investigation into the tragic accident is ongoing, and details surrounding why the van crossed into oncoming traffic have not been disclosed by authorities.

Kayla Bertoncini, who was an only child and had recently lost her mother, was well-loved in her community. Her friend organized a GoFundMe campaign to support the family during this challenging time. The fundraiser, with an $8,000 goal, had already received over $2,000 in donations at the time of publication.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Jade DeMoranville paid tribute to her friend, saying, “You were the kindest soul ever.” The South Boston community has come together to support the family in their time of need, offering condolences and assistance to help them navigate this heartbreaking loss.
