The San Francisco Giants will visit the South Side of Chicago on Monday. Due to a forecast of bad weather, first pitch has been moved up to 2:10pm.
Why it matters: Regardless of the stadium’s name, the Sox home opener is a Chicago tradition.
If you visit: This year, Guaranteed Rate Field offers elote corn dogs and frozen alcoholic pops. There is a new bag rule as well.
Appreciate the area by eating at 35th Street Red Hots before the game and then hanging around for a beer at Cork & Kerry (previously Jimbo’s Lounge).
Present situation: The forecast forecasts for rain in the afternoon. Take out your phone and watch the latest YouTube documentary, “Last Comiskey,” if there is a wait.
Background: The 1990 season, the final one played at the former Comiskey Park, is remembered in the excellent film produced and directed by Matt Flesch.
The documentary includes players, members of the media, fans, and Nancy Faust, of course.
What they’re saying: According to Flesch, who spoke to Axios, “There really wasn’t a venue like it, with the centerfield scoreboard, the upper decks that extended into the outfield, and the arches that gave way to the downtown area.”
Also, everyone enjoys a good underdog tale and a David vs. Goliath tale, and 1990 offered both.
It gives off a Comiskey Park feeling.
Despite its imperfections, baseball historian Cheryl Raye-Stout says, “it always felt like a breathing museum.”
Was it attractive? Nope. But it does capture the game’s history from the start.
